Druck has independent data to demonstrate the industry-leading capabilities of its TERPS product.

The proprietary TERPS-powered sensors were displayed at the Meteorological Technology World Expo. Druck’s Michael Thomas, Senior Global Product Manager, presented a paper explaining how TERPS is fundamentally different and offers distinct advantages over the electronic barometer technologies cited in the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) guide.

Challenge Robust, reliable innovations to forecast atmospheric changes have never been more critical, with the United Nations reporting an 83% increase in climate-related disasters since the turn of the century.

Thomas explains: “Barometric pressure is one of the key variables for weather prediction, and the World Meteorological Organisation sets the bar high in terms of the accuracy required – but we know that Druck pressure sensors not only meet but exceed those standards.

“Crucially, our calibration intervals are longer, which reduces the cost to the user and makes operations more efficient.”

Druck solution Thomas adds: “An ISO17025-accredited laboratory supporting a national meteorology organisation needed a sensor and located a Druck TERPS device in their stores from 2014. Upon rigorous testing of the sensor, they discovered the deviation from its calibration in 2014 was minuscule, at just -0.032hPa. That is the long-term stability, with minimal drift, we can offer to this sector.”

This exceptional reliability is delivered thanks to Druck’s UK world-class facility in Leicester, where the sensors are manufactured from a silicon wafer in a class 1 clean room and assembled to customers specifications.

Silicon fusion bonding and deep reactive ion etching create a sensor geometry that provides a stable and balanced resonating platform, which is, importantly, unaffected by media density or humidity.

Druck’s thermally-stable TERPS sensors are in operation across the globe – located at automatic weather stations on the world’s most mountainous peaks, to the ocean seabed, monitoring seismic variations.

Druck solution Thomas concludes: “The WMO guide defines the standard for meteorological barometers, and we are at the Expo to highlight how Druck’s TERPS technology offers our most accurate, reliable sensor, going beyond those standards.

And it can offer huge operational and cost benefits, when deployed within meteorology applications.”

Druck’s RPS8100-Meteo featuring TERPS technology has been specifically designed for metrological applications which is the first product line to incorporate TERPS technology can be customised for specific requirements.
